Q&A
question · Alaskan Malamute
Would you choose an Alaskan Malamute again?
answer · Alaskan Malamute
Same here! My Alaskan Klee Kai thinks he's the star of a comedy show. He loves to act silly, especially when he wants my attention. It’s like having a furry clown at home. Their playful nature can be so entertaining, but it can also be exhausting!

My Malamute has this cute quirk of rolling in the snow every time we go outside. It’s like he just can't resist, and it never fails to brighten my day.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
They're easier than expected, but they do need exercise.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
Yes! Mine does the same thing.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
I would have loved to know how vocal they can be. My Klee Kai, Max, loves to express himself, especially when he sees other dogs.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Alaskan Malamute, but you need to consider your lifestyle. They are large, powerful dogs that require plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation to keep them happy. If you're someone who loves outdoor adventures, they can be your best buddy. One of the quirks I've noticed is that they can be quite vocal, not in a yappy way, but they love to 'talk' and express themselves. Also, they have a strong prey drive, so early socialization is essential to help them learn how to behave around smaller animals.

My Malamute once decided to help with the laundry. He managed to pull a whole basket of clothes from the hallway to the living room. He was so proud, thinking he was being helpful! Then, while trying to 'fold' them, he ended up sitting on them. It was hilarious to watch him look confused when I started laughing instead of thanking him. Malamutes really have a knack for getting into trouble while trying to be helpful.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
I wouldn't recommend Alaskan Malamutes for inexperienced owners.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
Yes, my Malamute loves meeting other dogs. He's very social.

One time, during a family BBQ, my Klee Kai stole a hot dog right off my plate! It was both shocking and hilarious seeing them zoom away with their prize.
answer · Alaskan Malamute
Same. I stopped chasing perfect with my Alaskan Malamute.

Paw check on hot pavement is non-negotiable for us. If it is too hot for my hand, we are not going. Kodiak gets short sniff walks in the evening when it cools down. Shade and water matter more than any gadget we bought. ASPCA has a solid summer checklist: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/hot-weather-safety Worth a read if you are new to northern breeds in a warm state.

Mine too, every single time. Ours acts like every small win deserves a parade.
