Q&A
answer · American Foxhound
I let my Coonhound off-leash during hikes, but I keep a close eye on him. They have a strong tracking instinct. Just last week, he followed a scent and almost got lost! Now, I always keep him in sight or use a long line.

I definitely recommend this breed if you're active and love the outdoors. They are energetic and great companions for hiking or running. If you have patience and enjoy training, they can be wonderful pets.

Last summer, my Foxhound decided to chase a butterfly into a fountain. He jumped in and ended up soaked and shivering, but it was clear he thought it was the best day ever.

I can relate, my American Foxhound was a challenge at first. He's reliable now, but we had to work hard at it. Making recall fun with treats and praise helped, as they can be a bit stubborn, especially when they catch a scent.

One day while we were out in the park, my Coonhound, Duke, caught a whiff of something interesting and took off like a rocket. He ended up at a picnic site where a family was enjoying lunch. He sniffed out a hot dog and proceeded to sit right next to them, nose in the air, just waiting for someone to drop a bite. Everyone laughed, and they ended up giving him a piece, which made his day!

My Coonhound absolutely loves kids. He’s super playful and gentle around them, which is a great match. They seem to enjoy his energy and he enjoys their attention. Once, my niece was crying and he went right over to her, wagging his tail and nudging her with his nose. It's adorable how he can sense when someone needs comfort. Just keep an eye on him since he can get a little too excited sometimes, but overall, he's a fantastic family dog.

I find it challenging to train mine too. They are so independent, and you need to be consistent. It can be frustrating but worth it.

Every time we go out, it turns into a scent investigation. My Foxhound can’t help but follow his nose, even if it means going off the beaten path. Just be prepared for the unexpected!

Yes, it’s not just you! My Coonhound turns every walk into a full-on investigation. They really have a strong hunting instinct and love to follow scents. It’s entertaining but can be frustrating if you’re in a hurry!
