Definitely consider your lifestyle before getting an Akbash. They are bred to be livestock guardians, which means they can be strong-willed. Without experience, they might test your leadership. However, they are incredibly loving and protective of their family. Just know they might not be as eager to please as some other breeds, so patience and understanding are crucial. It may take time, but bonding and training are worth it.

I wish I had known about their exercise needs. They require a lot of physical activity.

Yes! My Kangal, Bear, always knows when I’m about to take him for a walk or even when it's time for dinner. He's always on alert!

I often hear people say Kangals require very little socialization, but that’s not true. They thrive on a strong bond with their family and need to be well-socialized to be well-rounded.

Having an Akbash has been a rewarding experience for me. These dogs are incredibly intelligent and can often think for themselves, which means they need an owner who understands their personality. They are fantastic at protecting livestock and will make a great companion if you give them the right training. Just keep in mind that their size and strength require a confident handler.

Delivery drivers get the serious face every time. I tell guests not to reach over the head. Space makes a huge difference. Calm check-ins with me get rewarded. Random petting from strangers does not.

You are not imagining it. Ours acts like every small win deserves a parade.

My Akbash is a bit of a diva. While they can handle sleeping outside, they really prefer the comfort of indoors, especially during cold nights. I’ve noticed that they love finding the coziest spot in the house. They're quite attached to us and enjoy being close by.
