Q&A
answer · Akita
I would absolutely recommend a Japanese Akitainu if you're ready for a strong-willed companion. They are loyal and protective, with a charming personality. However, their independence can sometimes be challenging. Make sure you're firm in training but also loving. They tend to bond closely with their families and are very affectionate.

My Akitainu loves to play tricks. He’ll pretend to be asleep until he gets a treat, and then he jumps up, acting all innocent.
answer · Akita
The funniest thing my Akita ever did was try to 'talk' back to me when I told him to stop barking. He was actually mimicking me, which made it hard not to laugh! Akitas have such an amusing personality, don't they?
answer · Akita
I find that my Japanese Akitainu is wonderful with kids. They are patient and very protective. It’s important, though, to supervise interactions when they are young. They do have a bit of a stubborn streak, so consistent training is essential. Overall, they have a gentle nature and love to play, making them excellent family pets.

He’s super observant and takes his time to check out new visitors.

I would still choose an Akita, but I’d be more prepared for their strong-willed nature. They are loyal and loving but need a firm hand in training. Their protective instincts mean they can be wary of strangers, so early socialization is crucial. If you’re up for a little challenge, they make incredible companions.
question · Akita
Be honest... does your Akita secretly have one favorite person in the family?
answer · Akita
Yes, my Akitainu shows clear favoritism.
answer · Akita
My favorite thing about the Japanese Akitainu is their loyalty. They form such strong bonds with their families.
answer · Akita
One thing that surprised me about owning an Akita was their protectiveness. They can be aloof with strangers, which is often misinterpreted as aggression. It’s not that they’re mean; they just take their guarding duties seriously. On the flip side, they are incredibly loving with their family. It’s like having a guardian and a cuddle buddy all in one!
question · Akita
What's one personality trait you absolutely love about this breed?
answer · Akita
After bringing my Japanese Akitainu, Yuki, home, I was surprised by how attached she became to me so quickly. I expected her to be more independent since Akitainus are generally known for their strong will. But she follows me around the house and even sits next to me while I work. They have a regal air, but don’t let that fool you; they crave companionship. I love how she's affectionate and loves to cuddle, especially during chilly nights. It really adds a warmth to our home.
