I’d recommend a Šarplaninac if you have experience with larger breeds. They are loyal and protective, but they can be quite independent. My Šarplaninac, Zora, needs consistent training and socialization to behave well with others. They can be aloof with strangers, but they’re incredibly loving with their families.

Yes, my Šarplaninac has the same intense gaze. It's almost like he’s assessing their character before allowing them to interact. It’s funny, but also a bit intimidating for first-time visitors. I read that this breed is naturally protective, so that might explain the serious expression. Once they’re accepted, they can be the sweetest dogs.
