My neighbor says Malamutes should never be trusted off leash. Do you agree?

I disagree; it really depends on the individual dog.

I've had good experiences letting my Malamute off-leash in safe areas. They're loyal and tend to stick close by, but I always keep an eye on him. If I notice another animal around, I’ll put him back on the leash just to be safe.

I can see why some people would say that. Alaskan Malamutes are incredibly strong-willed and have a high prey drive, which means they can easily get distracted. I generally keep mine on a leash when we're in busy areas, but in safe, enclosed spaces, I trust her just fine. It's all about knowing your dog's temperament.

I think it depends on a few factors, including training and socialization. My Malamute has a great recall and is very responsive to commands. Still, I always recommend being cautious. They can be very stubborn, and if they see something interesting, they might bolt. So, off-leash is fine for us in open areas, but I wouldn’t recommend it in crowded places.
