Q&A
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
They can be a handful, especially if you lack experience. Akbash dogs are protective but also require proper training from the start. If you’re prepared for some challenges, they can be great companions.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Mine does too, it's hilarious!
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Some think they are aggressive, but they are really protective and can be sweet.

I've had my Anatolian Shepherd for about three years now, and I can say it takes a lot of patience. They are bred to protect livestock, and their instincts kick in, which can lead to strong-willed behavior. If you don't have experience, you might find their independent nature overwhelming. They require socialization and consistent training from an early age. If you're committed to understanding their needs, it’s possible, but definitely consider breed-specific training classes or a mentor who knows the breed well. Otherwise, you might struggle.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
He’s very friendly once he gets to know them!
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
When new people visit, my Akbash is very protective. She'll bark at first, but if they don’t pose a threat, she calms down and is friendly. It's interesting because she really seems to have an instinct about who's a friend and who's not.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Yes! Mine is a gentle giant.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
They are big dogs, so space can be a challenge.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Same here! My Kangal, Rex, always knows what’s up. It’s like he can predict my next move.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
I would choose the Akbash again in a heartbeat. They are incredibly loyal and have such a strong presence. However, they need plenty of space and exercise, so keep that in mind. Their natural herding tendencies really shine when they interact with kids.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
My Anatolian surprised me when he took a stand against a coyote that wandered too close to our yard. I didn’t expect him to be so brave!
question · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Do you think this breed needs a large property, or have you made it work another way?
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Honestly, my Akbash seems to enjoy both. During the summer, they love lounging outside, but when it gets chilly, they want nothing more than to be inside with us.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Mine alerts first, loves people later. Alert barking is normal. I reward quiet after the first notice, not endless rehearsal.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Same energy here. I stopped expecting dignity. It makes life funnier. We have a running joke in the house that the dog thinks they run security, entertainment, and quality control.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
I generally don't let visitors pet my Akbash. They can be standoffish with strangers, and I want to make sure they feel comfortable. It's best to let them approach on their own terms.
answer · Kangal Shepherd Dog
Delivery drivers get the serious face every time. Forced greetings made things worse for us. Now we let strangers ignore the dog until the dog is ready. These dogs notice everything. Camera alerts are usually late compared to my dog. Still figuring it out like everyone else, Liam.

Same energy here. Ours acts like every small win deserves a parade.
