Q&A
answer · Afghan Hound
I was shocked at how vocal my Afghan Hound can be. She has this deep bark that sounds fierce, but it's mostly just her demonstrating her presence. It's comforting to know she's always on guard.

Brushing a little each day has become a part of our routine. I set a timer for 15 minutes so it stays short and sweet. My Afghan Hound seems to appreciate it, and it cuts down on excess shedding. Plus, it keeps his coat healthy and shiny, reducing the need for long grooming sessions. I also use this special rake that works wonders on his undercoat. You can find it at a pet store or online.

Yes, mine is super affectionate too!

I love my Afghan Hound and would definitely recommend the breed. They are known for their independence, which can be a quirk for first-time dog owners. They can be a handful, especially during the puppy stage, but their loyalty and affection are worth it. Their grooming needs can be intense, so if you're not prepared for that, think twice. Still, they have such a regal look and are great at adapting to different living situations, as long as they get enough exercise.

One thing that caught me off guard is their sensitivity. Afghan Hounds can be quite in tune with emotions, and they don't respond well to harsh training methods. They also have a strong independent streak, which can make them seem aloof at times. It's important to use positive reinforcement to keep their trust and encourage good behavior. Their dramatic personalities can also surprise you; they are both regal and goofy at the same time.

The grooming is a big task.

Yes, I'd choose an Afghan Hound again without a doubt. They are regal and have such beautiful coats.

My Afghan loves to prance around like a diva.

My Afghan Hound sleeps on the bed, and I must say, it’s a treat! While they appear aloof, they have this deep love for their family. It’s hard to resist those soulful eyes staring at you while you sleep. They’re also quite graceful and I find it fascinating how much they enjoy stretching out. If you have the space, I recommend it!

What's your Afghan's funniest habit at home?
answer · Afghan Hound
Same struggle here. I got a grooming apron and started brushing outside so the hair does not take over the house. Velvet looks best right after a bath when the coat is clean and silky. Day to day I focus on keeping mats out, not magazine cover perfect. My groomer said little and often beats one marathon session. That advice saved me. Every Afghan Hound I've met has this regal attitude. They walk like they own the place, it's hilarious. They're known for being quite aloof, but they also have this goofy side that comes out when they play.
