My biggest challenge has been managing their energy level. American Eskimo Dogs are super playful and require a lot of exercise. I've found that incorporating daily walks and playtime helps keep them happy and well-behaved, plus it gives me some exercise too!

Keeping my American Eskimo Dog calm during storms has been tough.

I’ve faced challenges with separation anxiety, particularly since American Eskimo Dogs form strong bonds with their owners. Whenever I leave the house, they seem to get really upset. I’ve started practicing short departures and gradually increasing the time away. It seems to help ease their anxiety. I also provide them with interactive toys to keep them busy while I’m gone. It requires patience, but it's worth it when I come home to a happy pup instead of a distressed one.

One of the biggest hurdles has been their tendency to escape. American Eskimo Dogs are known for their agility and cleverness, so I’ve had to be extra careful with my yard. I've installed a taller fence and made sure there are no gaps they can slip through. Even then, I keep a close eye on them during playtime outside. They can be quite the escape artists and don’t hesitate to explore if given the chance.

Training them not to bark too much can be difficult. They are natural watchdogs and will alert you at every little noise. I try to reward quiet behavior and redirect their focus, but it takes consistency.

One major challenge for me has been grooming. American Eskimo Dogs have a thick double coat that requires regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles. If I skip a few days, it can turn into a mini disaster. I've learned that making it a fun bonding time helps, so I often give treats during the grooming sessions. They are such smart dogs and once they realize it's not a chore, they usually cooperate better.
