Q&A
answer · American Foxhound
Not really, especially in open areas.
question · American Foxhound
Would you recommend this breed?
answer · American Foxhound
I definitely recommend this breed. They need a lot of exercise, but they are such fun dogs. Their tracking ability is impressive, so if you like outdoor activities, they can be a great partner.
answer · American Foxhound
One time, my Foxhound jumped into a mud puddle while chasing a squirrel. He emerged covered head to toe in mud and looked like a little monster. The best part was his confused expression when I tried to clean him up, as if he was completely unaware of how messy he was. They can be such goofballs.

One surprising thing about owning an American English Coonhound is their incredible energy levels. These dogs were bred for hunting, so they require a lot of exercise. A short walk won’t cut it; they thrive on long runs and playtime. You'd think they would tire out, but they can keep going for hours! I've also found they are sensitive to temperatures; they prefer cooler weather. Given all this, it can be a bit challenging to keep them entertained and happy if you're not an active person.

My American Foxhound's recall is pretty solid, but it took a while to get there. Initially, he would get distracted by smells and other dogs, but with consistent training, he improved significantly. It's important to practice in different environments to reinforce that behavior.

Coonhounds can be a little rambunctious, so I make sure my kids are able to handle his energy. He’s really patient and loving, but he can also get caught up in excitement. I’ve seen him be careful around my toddler, but he also tries to play tug-of-war, which can be amusing. Overall, he’s a great companion for the kids, just keep things supervised and you’ll be fine!

Three throws is a warm up.
answer · American Foxhound
You are not imagining it. The confidence is hilarious for such a small dog in a big world.

Last week, my Foxhound, Duke, and I were walking in the park when he spotted a group of ducks. He barked and tried to chase them, but they were much faster. The looks on people's faces were priceless as he made a complete fool of himself splashing around!
question · American Foxhound
How does your dog do with children?
answer · American Foxhound
Definitely agree with that! Their energy levels are something else. You have to keep them busy or else they find their own fun, which can lead to trouble.
answer · American Foxhound
Scent games have completely transformed our play sessions. My American English Coonhound used to lose interest quickly, but now she is fully engaged in searching for treats. I've noticed that she is calmer and more focused afterward, which is a huge plus. Plus, it's a fun way to tire her out without just running around.
question · American Foxhound
What's been the biggest challenge?
answer · American Foxhound
For sure! My Foxhound once chased a squirrel for a good 20 minutes. It turned into a workout for me as I tried to keep up. They have an incredible sense of smell, and once they lock onto something, good luck getting them back!
answer · American Foxhound
What caught me off guard was just how independent they can be. They have a strong hunting instinct and can easily get distracted by scents.
answer · American Foxhound
Absolutely! They have a playful nature and are great in social settings. Just make sure you're ready for their exercise needs!
answer · American Foxhound
Never runs out. Ever. Flirt pole in the yard helps burn the edge off before we come inside.
question · American Foxhound
I swear my Foxhound could follow one scent across the entire state 😂 What's the most determined tracking adventure your dog has ever taken you on?
