One thing nobody warned me about when I got my American English Coonhound is their stubbornness. They can be incredibly willful and often test boundaries. It's essential to stay consistent with training, or they will take advantage. They also have this amazing hunting instinct; if they catch a scent, you’ll have a hard time getting their attention back. Their love for tracking can turn walks into wild chases if you're not careful. But once they bond with you, their loyalty is unmatched.

What I wasn’t prepared for was my American English Coonhound’s need for companionship. They do not like being alone for long periods. If I’m gone all day, I come home to a very vocal pup! They love social interaction, whether with humans or other dogs.

One surprising thing about owning an American English Coonhound is their incredible energy levels. These dogs were bred for hunting, so they require a lot of exercise. A short walk won’t cut it; they thrive on long runs and playtime. You'd think they would tire out, but they can keep going for hours! I've also found they are sensitive to temperatures; they prefer cooler weather. Given all this, it can be a bit challenging to keep them entertained and happy if you're not an active person.

The shedding is real with American English Coonhounds! I didn't expect to be vacuuming so often. But their short coat does make grooming pretty easy most of the time.

Many people don’t mention how strong the prey drive is in American English Coonhounds. If they catch a whiff of something interesting, they’re off! This breed is not for the faint-hearted or those who want a chill dog. They love to chase, and it's essential to have a secure yard. Their noses are just so powerful; they can sniff out a rabbit from far away, and once they smell it, good luck getting them back! But that adventurous spirit keeps life exciting.

Honestly, I didn’t expect how vocal my American English Coonhound would be. They bark and howl a lot, especially when they catch a scent. It can be quite amusing and sometimes a bit overwhelming.
